Who is responsible
Chillar Theory is a weekly newsletter written by Team Chillar Theory. Ved Muthal is the person responsible for how your data is used: the Data Fiduciary under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What we collect
When you subscribe through a signup box on chillartheory.com or a Chillar Theory landing page:
- Email address (required) and first name (only if you give it)
- Edition choices: India, India–Europe Corridor, or both
- Signup details: the date and time you subscribed, the form or page you used, and the link that brought you there (for example, an Instagram or LinkedIn link)
- Approximate location and IP address at signup, recorded by Kit, used to show the right consent options (for example, the GDPR consent box for readers in the EU)
- Email activity: whether an issue was delivered, opened, and which links were clicked
If you reply to an email, we also receive whatever you write and your email address.
The free tools on this site run in your browser. Nothing you type into them is sent to us. One exception to "nothing leaves your browser", and it isn't us: the remittance calculator fetches the European Central Bank's reference rate from Frankfurter (frankfurter.dev), a free public service. Your browser sends it only a currency code and a date, plus the IP address any website request carries. Your amounts and rates stay on your device. We do not collect payment details, government IDs, or financial account information through the newsletter.
Why we use it
- To send you the editions you chose
- To send the welcome email and the links you signed up for
- To understand which issues and topics are useful, in aggregate, so the newsletter gets better
- To keep the list healthy, for example removing addresses that bounce
- To answer you when you write to us
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We do not use it for advertising profiles.
Legal basis
- India (DPDP Act): your consent, given when you subscribe.
- EU and EEA (GDPR): your consent (Article 6(1)(a)). Readers in the EU see a consent checkbox on the signup form.
You can withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing does not affect anything done before you withdrew.
Who helps us handle it
- Kit (kit.com), based in the United States, stores the subscriber list and sends the emails. Kit processes your data only on our instructions.
- Microsoft 365 hosts the chillartheory.com mailboxes, so replies you send are stored there.
Because Kit is in the United States, your data is transferred outside India and the EU. Kit uses recognised safeguards for these transfers, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, as described in its own privacy policy.
How long we keep it
- While you are subscribed, we keep your data so we can send the newsletter.
- When you unsubscribe, you stop receiving emails immediately. Kit keeps your email address on a suppression list so you are never emailed again by mistake.
- If you ask for deletion, we delete your subscriber record from Kit within 30 days.
- We may remove readers who have not opened an issue in 12 months.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can:
- Unsubscribe in one click using the link at the bottom of every email
- Change editions using the "Update your profile" link at the bottom of every email
- Ask for a copy of the data we hold about you
- Ask us to correct anything inaccurate
- Ask us to delete your data
- Withdraw consent at any time
If you are in the EU or EEA, you also have the rights to restrict or object to processing and to data portability. If you are in India, you may nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become incapacitated.
To use any of these rights, email gullak@chillartheory.com from the address you subscribed with. We reply within 30 days.
Complaints
Please write to us first at gullak@chillartheory.com so we can fix it.
- India: if you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
- EU and EEA: you can complain to the data protection authority in the country where you live.
Children
Chillar Theory is meant for readers aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has subscribed, write to us and we will delete the record.
Cookies and tracking
The signup forms are provided by Kit and may use cookies needed to submit the form. The newsletter emails use tracking pixels and tracked links to record opens and clicks, as described above.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so in the newsletter before the change takes effect. The effective date at the top always shows the latest version.
